Passive GPS vs AVL or "Real Time"
The major difference between "Passive" GPS and "Near Real Time" GPS is that "Passive" has no monthly fees or additional charges.
All "Near Real Time" has monthly charges, per vehicle, per month. Typically,
under a contract of 2 to 3 years.
All "Near Real Time" solutions communicate the data back either via satellite or
down a cell phone network. In the case of a Cell based communication, you are paying for the cell carrier data transfer.
GeoTab is a "Passive" GPS Solution. Trip information and data is down loaded
at the end of a time period, determined by the fleet owner. The down load of the trip information is accomplished by means
of a memory key or by an RF signal that brings the information over at the end of the day, 2 days, week or whatever.
You cannot see your vehicles on a screen as they travel throughout the day. A: Because it's only close, not exact. When you see your vehicle on the screen, there is a delay
factor in the return of the data to you. Typically from a low of 5 minutes out to as long as 10-15.
The closer the accuracy, the higher the monthly charge. This is because more data is traveling
down the cell network and the more data sent (high accuracy) the higher the charge. Q: Even though GeoTab is passive, don't you have to pay for the use of the GPS Satellite? A: No. The signals or "Pings" from GPS Satellites are public domain and
as such incur no charge to capture and utilize. Q: Aren't we better with a "Near Real Time" Solution? We need to see where our vehicles
are during the day. A: The question is, "What is the real value of viewing where they were to your business?"
The fact is that most fleets do not need "Near Real Time GPS". Analyze your business. How often do you
have to contact a driver to find out where they are and for what reasons? Unless your business is highly focused
around dynamic dispatching, (Courier companies, EMS or the like, the chances are your necessity to reach
the drivers on a regular basis is limited. If your business does not have a 35% The most cost effective answer is a combination of GeoTab and a private network
based phone.
Q: How much does "Near Real Time" cost? A: It varies, but you have to buy the hardware, (GPS phone or Satellite aerial), pay a connection fee (monthly)
and then pay monthly for the data transferred. Typically this monthly fee will range from a low
of $40 per month, per vehicle up to and exceeding $80.00 per month, per vehicle. Don't forget the internal staff you will require to
monitor the screens and the infra-structure costs. Q: How will GeoTab save us on our Fleet costs? A: First, GeoTab has no monthly charge or additional fees. With GeoTab, you buy it,
and that's it. One charge, One time. |
